Entry for August 8, 2008
yesterday was about as good as it gets. we moved the cows up the mountain. the cows moved rather slow, but that meant more time on horseback. i love these days, however, it is a lot more fun going to bed at 2:30 am than getting up at 2:30 in the morning. but i will never complain about moving cows on a horse. the gunbarrel fire (between cody and yellowstone) is still going, but hasnt come too close to the main ranch (west of cody). most of the smoke blew to the north in the morning, but it began to drift in during the afternoon. we have a lot of pine beetle kill up there, so the forest service is letting the fire go, for the most part, to help clean out the dead areas. watching the fire is almost hypnotic. the firefighters have done a terrific job of keeping the guest ranches safe. they did evacuate 3 ranches the other day, but so far, thankfully, no occupied buildings have been lost. they have been doing a great job in less than ideal conditions. lets hope the worst is over.
