Entry for August 28, 2008
this has been one hell of a week. on tuesday we were called up to the main ranch. due to the encroaching wild fire, we had to evacuate our cattle. the cows were several miles up the valley and we had to move them down off the back side of the mountain. luckily a neighboring ranch helped us move them and then let them stay overnight in one of their pastures. the next morning we finished moving them down to some corrals. after that we sorted them and then trailered them down to meeteetse. many people offered their help, time and horse trailers to haul the cattle. it was very surreal to see the wall of smoke move down the valley behind us. and as the ash started falling, it looked like snow, only it doesnt taste as good as pure snow. it was also strange to see all of the forest service and firefighting trucks on the ranch. they covered the hay loft and barn with a foil wrap to prevent the falling embers from igniting the hay. we are very fortunate to have so many people working hard to protect our ranch. info on the fire can be found at this link http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1439/ there are some pics there too.
on top of all of this, i now need to prepare for labor day weekend, meeteetse's biggest weekend of the year. sunday is our most notorious dessert happy hour. in addition to all of the great desserts, we will be offering a wonderful selection of fine wine and micro brews. then on monday is the annual parade and rodeo. there are a lot of events going on all day saturday, sunday and monday. i will post more details and pics throughout the weekend.
